PRESS REVIEW

July 7, 2010 - Now Lebanon - Williams: STL unconnected to UNIFIL

In an interview published on Wednesday in Al-Hayat, United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon Michael Williams said that the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) is an independent body separate from the UN, addressing the explanation that last week’s incidents between UNIFIL and residents of the South were due to indictments expected from the STL.

Last Saturday, civilians mobbed and disarmed a UNIFIL patrol just north of the village of Kabrikha. A French peacekeeper was also reportedly injured in protests in the South earlier last week, sparked by UNIFIL maneuvers.

Williams said it was difficult to explain last week’s incidents between UNIFIL and residents of the South, but that the explanations were more likely local than regional.

He added that UNIFIL did not necessarily share Israeli stances regarding the situation in the South, saying that there is no clear presence of weapons in the South.

Williams also stated that UNIFIL could not bear the repetition of incidents like last week’s protests.

Background - خلفية

On 13 December 2005 the Government of the Lebanese Republic requested the UN to establish a tribunal of an international character to try all those who are alleged responsible for the attack of 14 february 2005 that killed the former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri and 22 others. The United Nations and the Lebanese Republic consequently negotiated an agreement on the establishment of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon.
