Daily Star - France repeats: Hariri witness is no longer here, May 08, 2008


French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner reiterated on Wednesday that Mohammad Zuhair Siddiq, a key witness in the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, is "not under our surveillance and is no longer under the jurisdiction of the authorities in France." Kouchner said he has informed Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Moallem of this state of affairs, adding that Siddiq "left our country on March 13." In an interview with Kuwaiti daily As-Siyassah early in March Siddiq said he has left France and currently resides "somewhere near both France and the location where the Special Tribunal for Lebanon is to be held [The Hague]."

Background - خلفية

On 13 December 2005 the Government of the Lebanese Republic requested the UN to establish a tribunal of an international character to try all those who are alleged responsible for the attack of 14 february 2005 that killed the former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri and 22 others. The United Nations and the Lebanese Republic consequently negotiated an agreement on the establishment of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon.
