BEIRUT: Special Tribunal for Lebanon Prosecutor Daniel Bellemare met on Friday with Interior Minister Ziyad Baroud to discuss collaboration between the ministry and the prosecutor’s office. Bellemare is to continue his visits on Saturday and is to meet with Foreign Minister Ali Shami. He said that the main reason of his seven-day visit to Beirut was to “revive the hope of the Lebanese, especially the families of the victims.” He expressed optimism about the progress made in the case and stressed the importance of gaining public confidence. However, Bellemare said he couldn’t fix a date to issue the indictment in the assassination case of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.

On 13 December 2005 the Government of the Lebanese Republic requested the UN to establish a tribunal of an international character to try all those who are alleged responsible for the attack of 14 february 2005 that killed the former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri and 22 others. The United Nations and the Lebanese Republic consequently negotiated an agreement on the establishment of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon.
