PRESS REVIEW

July 24, 2010 - Now Lebanon - Maalouf: Stop the accusations

Lebanese Forces bloc MP Joseph Maalouf told LBCI television on Saturday that Prime Minister Saad Hariri’s description of Lebanon as a state that deserves to be sacrificed for is a call on the country’s people to act responsibly.

Accusations need to come to an end, he added, possibly referring to the recent war of words between March 8 and 14 alliance figures as domestic tension in Lebanon has increased.

The situation in the country has grown anxious following Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah’s recent speeches rejecting a potential Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) indictment.

Media outlets have reported that the tribunal will soon indict Hezbollah members for the 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.

The MP called the STL an internationally recognized body, saying that its decision should be waited for. He also said that the first politician to accuse Syria of murdering Rafik Hariri was Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun.

The goal today is to establish an independent state, and Syria’s steps assures its recognition of Lebanon and its sovereignty, Maalouf added.

He also said that the Lebanese should not jump to conclusions on the issue of the spies uncovered in Lebanon.

Three telecom employees have been arrested since June on suspicion of spying for Israel. March 8 coalition figures have questioned whether the Internal Security Forces (ISF) failed to arrest the alleged spies when they knew about the agents’ activities.

Background - خلفية

On 13 December 2005 the Government of the Lebanese Republic requested the UN to establish a tribunal of an international character to try all those who are alleged responsible for the attack of 14 february 2005 that killed the former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri and 22 others. The United Nations and the Lebanese Republic consequently negotiated an agreement on the establishment of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon.
