PRESS REVIEW

August 4, 2010 - Now Lebanon - Geagea: Nasrallah’s claim that Israel murdered Hariri “best scenario”

“Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah’s claim that he has irrefutable evidence that would implicate Israel in the 2005 murder of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri would be the best case scenario,” Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea told Al-Markaziya news agency on Wednesday.

Geagea added that should Nasrallah have information about Hariri’s murder, then he must hand it to the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) first before sharing it with the public.

The Hezbollah chief said on Tuesday that he will reveal during his August 9 press conference irrefutable evidence proving that Israel was behind Hariri’s killing.

Geagea also said that Israel fears clashing with the Lebanese army, “because the international community would condemn any Israeli aggression against [our] army. However, the world would support Tel Aviv in any conflict against Hezbollah.”

Lebanese soldiers and Israel Defense Forces (IDF) troops exchanged fire along the border village of Aadaiseh on Tuesday, with each side accusing the other of having started the fighting.

Two Lebanese soldiers, a journalist and a senior Israeli officer were killed in the clashes, according to sources from both sides.

“International and Arab reactions would have been different if Hezbollah had intefered in yesterday’s clashes with Israel,” Geagea said.

Background - خلفية

On 13 December 2005 the Government of the Lebanese Republic requested the UN to establish a tribunal of an international character to try all those who are alleged responsible for the attack of 14 february 2005 that killed the former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri and 22 others. The United Nations and the Lebanese Republic consequently negotiated an agreement on the establishment of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon.
