The U.N. Security Council on Wednesday approved the appointment of Belgian lawyer Serge Brammertz as the new UN war crimes prosecutor for ex-Yugoslavia.In a resolution adopted unanimously, the 15-member council approved Brammertz's nomination put forward by UN chief Ban Ki-moon. Brammertz, 45, replaces Carla del Ponte as the new chief prosecutor at the International Criminal Tribunal for former Yugoslavia (ICTY) from January 1. Del Ponte, 60, whose mandate expires on December 31, is to become Switzerland's ambassador to Argentina in January. Brammertz, a former deputy prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, had been in charge of the probe in the killing of late Lebanese premier Rafik Hariri since January 2006. He will be succeeded as the head of the probe launched in 2005 by Canadian prosecutor Daniel Bellemare.
